“When I turned eighty I finally understood why I was born!” These were the words of an elderly Georgian man who heard that a missions trip to Russia was taking place. In fact, he heard that the purpose of the trip was to go into Russian schools to teach about Jesus. Imagine that! When he heard those words, he did not hesitate to sign up for what might be called “Mission Impossible.” This was not a man who had never done anything in his walk with the Lord. This was a man who had a string of accomplishments for the Kingdom, yet he still felt his mission to spread the gospel was not fulfilled.
As I took a ride in my car the other day, I listened to a CD I was given since I was not in attendance at Sunday service this past week. I heard a message from a guest at my church who was one of the most passionate speakers I had ever heard about taking the gospel to the nations. He used the story of the eighty year old man to emphasize the importance of obeying the call to follow Christ.
For the past six years, I have been working on a book about my life. Thankfully, it should be out by the first of the year! Yes, I’ve had a setback, but I believe God controls the setbacks and makes them setups! One of my typical thoughts along the way was “I’m in my early sixties and am just now writing my first book.” I found myself thinking why it took so long for me to get to this point. When I heard the story of the other senior saint, I finally gave myself grace and realized I was right on God’s timetable. I was not too early or too late. He knew the exact time when my book was to be published.
What about you? Have you entertained any of these excuses? I’m too young. I’m too old. I don’t know how to do it. I don’t have any money. I can shoot that last thought down after talking with a woman at a recent retreat. You see, she’s been working on a book for a couple of years and was wondering how she would get it published because money was an issue. She told me members of her book club were going to pay for her book to be published!
How awesome is that?
Phil. 4:19 reads,” And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus (NIV).” What has He asked you to do? What are your excuses? That’s right–excuses! If He called you to do something, He will supply the resources. All you have to do is ask.
